Consultant to Support Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative, Majuro

About the role

UNICEF is seeking a consultant to provide technical support to the Ministry of Health and Human Services (MoHHS) of the Republic of Marshall Islands (RMI). The 12-month consultancy strengthens breastfeeding promotion by improving the implementation of the Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI) in two main hospitals and their surrounding communities. It is open only to international candidates.

Key responsibilities

• Rebuild the capacity of health workers after recent staff turnover and resource constraints.
• Strengthen implementation of the BFHI and integrate the Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding into quality-of-care standards for maternal and child health.
• Link facility and community/home services to support breastfeeding.

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree in human nutrition, nursing, midwifery, maternal and child health, public health or a relevant field (a master's is an asset).
• At least five years of progressively responsible professional experience in breastfeeding, maternal and newborn health, nutrition or related health-service programming, including clinical or service-delivery settings.
• Minimum 3 years of demonstrated experience in nutrition areas.
• Fluency in written and spoken English; knowledge of Tongan or another Pacific language is an asset.
• Desirable: experience with ministries of health in Pacific or comparable small-island settings, and certification as a lactation consultant, BFHI trainer/assessor or equivalent.

Required skills

• Demonstrated BFHI or lactation-management expertise.
• Experience implementing infant-feeding or breastfeeding policies.
• Competency-based training, ToT, mentoring and supportive supervision experience.
• Strong facilitation, coaching, analytical, reporting and stakeholder-engagement skills.
